The 6 AM Ritual: Why Every Athlete's Morning Starts With Coffee

First in a series on the small rituals that carry athletes through the early mornings. This one starts with a cup of coffee.

Nobody talks about the part before the part. The alarm at 5:15. The dark kitchen. The five minutes where your body hasn't agreed to any of this yet. Before the warm-up, before the first rep, before the gym even opens its doors, there's a cup of coffee doing the only job that matters: getting you out the door.

It's not about the caffeine

Ask any athlete why they drink coffee before training and the answer is rarely "for the energy." It's the ten minutes of quiet before a loud day. It's the thing that makes 5 AM feel like a choice instead of a punishment. Hockey players call it their reset before the rink. Runners call it the only part of the morning they don't rush. Parents hauling a gear bag into a cold arena call it survival, and they're not wrong either.

The ritual matters as much as the drink. Same mug, same five minutes, same quiet before the noise starts. Athletes build routines because routines remove decisions, and the fewer decisions you have to make at 5:15 AM, the more likely you are to actually show up.

Built for people who get up before the sun

That's the thinking behind Le p'tit sportif, the coffee Living Sisu built with our friends at Café ZAB. A Brazilian natural from the Sancoffee cooperative in Campo das Vertentes, roasted in Montréal, with notes of brownie, hazelnut and a creamy body: the kind of cup that's good enough to want, not just need.

It's whole bean, shipped from Montréal, and it's for the parent opening the gym doors at 6 AM, the athlete running through their pre-game routine, and everyone else who treats the first cup of the day like part of the training plan.

The next one in this series

We'll be back with more from this series: the pre-game routines of athletes we work with, what they drink and why, and the small habits that separate a good morning from a rushed one.

Until then, the coffee that started this whole thing:
